Scripture Memory 2012: Verse 1

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I'm so excited to start this memory verse challenge, and I hope you are too!

It’s time to choose your first memory verse (out of 24) for 2012! If you haven’t done so already, please read the instructions from the post on December 19th. It will tell you everything you need to know.

Just a quick refresher: sometime today, post the Scripture passage you have chosen by leaving a comment below. Be sure your comment includes the following details:

First name, verse, reference, and version.

To get things started, here is my first Scripture entry of 2012:

Megan: Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of Life set me free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2 NIV

Since I have a 4 day-old newborn, I made it easy on myself this time around and used a verse I did from last year. Please feel free to take it easy whenever you need to as well. Use a verse you already know or find a very simple, short verse. This helps make the challenge not feel overwhelming. Remember what Beth said in her instructions: "it's a marathon, not a sprint!" Another time you might want to have more of a challenge and memorize a multi-verse passage. It's completely up to you!

Be sure to handwrite the verse in your spiral notebook of index cards to help engrave it on your mind. You might want to write your contact information on the inside cover in case you leave it somewhere and God causes someone gracious to find it.

If you are the kind of person who likes to underline, highlight, or otherwise mark in your Bible, I thought it was neat last year to underline and date each verse as I memorized it. Now it's fun when I'm reading the Bible to come across verses I memorized last year. I stop and make sure I can still say them so that they stay in my long-term memory.

And one last encouragement from Beth: "Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can do this! Remember, KEEP IT SIMPLE AND MEANINGFUL!"

Love this verse. I really need to start seeking and waiting for the Lord more. Seems like I hardly have any time to just quietly be with the Lord. Also my prayer life has also been very dry. Your verse Megan is one I should memorize!!!! I know the Lord is gracious to me.... Lord willing I will be reading through my Bible again this year starting today:) Last year was the first year that I did not read through it and I think I suffered spiritually. I hope to make this year the 5th time of reading it. I think this memory verse is a gracious act of God towards me to help me start earnestly to seek after Him.

I wanted the first verse I memorized to remind me to put God above all else and not rely on my own strength - especially while I'm in the midst of setting all these goals and things I want to accomplish in the new year. The Lord is who I need to put my trust in - not myself!

Oh, and by the way, I'm a friend of Belinda's :) She invited me to join with you ladies. This is the first time I've ever tried something like this and I'm looking forward to it!

I am really excited for this year and participating in this group. I used to have an pretty rigid and consistent Bible reading routine, but felt like I was getting a little legalistic about it, so I eased up. Then I had kids and I'm sad to say I really have not been able to get myself back into a routine since then.

I chose this verse because it is my goal for this program. To fill my mind with Christ on a daily basis and see my life and perspectives be changed!

Okay, I'm going to give this a shot, Megan! I'm notorious to starting things like this and then quitting so we'll see how I do. :o/ But 2 verses a month doesn't seem too bad.

Proverbs 14:15 - A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps.

My goal through memorizing scripture this year is that I will be able to use what I memorize to live more intentionally. Use those verses to help guide my steps.

I spend my days with small children. I need this reminder for my attitude that I'm working for my Saviour.

How any times do I revisit things/people that God has cut out of my life for MY GOOD! Love this verse and such a great one to start out on! Thanks, Megan for doing this!!

Daily this year I need to remember to not let myself get so busy serving Christ that I forget to be still and rest in his presence so this seems like the right verse to have running through my head all year.

I chose this verse because I struggle with anxiety. I memorized this verse about a year and a half ago but needed a refresher. I hope I can stick with this....

This is a little longer than recommended but it was the first verse to come to my mind. I love it.
